Did you know that homes without a security system are 300% more likely to be burglarized? Security cameras can provide you the peace of mind you want, plus give you the ability to keep in touch with what’s going on at home when you’re away. Whether you’re thinking about investing in a camera or have some already installed, here are a few tips on how to get the most out of your security camera setup.

1. Set up motion detection automations

Something missing from your backyard? Don’t waste time scrolling through hours of video trying to find out what happened. Set your cameras to record as soon as motion is detected and send you an alert with a video clip. This way you’ll be able to monitor your home and property 24/7 and be notified whenever something unusual occurs. The better cameras can tell the difference between waving branches, pets, and people, to help reduce the number of alerts you get, plus you can also check out your camera settings and adjust the sensitivity to match your needs.

2. Protect more than your front door

Many DIY security systems focus on the front door and interior access points, but for comprehensive protection, it’s important to give yourself more coverage. Backdoors are more likely to be left open, and as a result, are one of the most common entry points for burglars. Putting outdoor cameras around your house in visible areas not only gives you  additional sets of eyes on your property, they also act as a deterrent for anyone who might be thinking about coming inside.

3. Use two way audio to talk and listen

All video doorbells come equipped with two-way talk so you can interact with whomever is at your front door, but this same feature is now available on indoor and outdoor cameras. With two way audio you can check in on your pets, talk to your kids if need be, and in the unfortunate scenario where you get alerted about a burglary in progress, you can use this feature to confront them from a  distance. As soon as you get the notification, just open your app and press the “Talk” button. Not only this will frighten the intruder, but also draw their attention to the camera, making it easier for the authorities to identify him later.

4. Connect the camera with the other smart devices

In addition to acting as another set of eyes, you can get more from your camera by connecting it with other smart devices, and even use it to trigger new actions. For example, by connecting it with a siren or floodlights, you can automatically activate those devices when motion is detected. Bright lights or loud siren are enough to scare off any would-be intruder—and you can also use your app to check the status of your door locks and window sensors. But you can also use the cameras to assist you with more everyday behaviors, like turning up your lights to 30% if they sense motion in the hallway between 10 pm and 5 am to ensure you don’t trip on a stray toy left where it doesn’t belong.
